- +o XVM Manager Graphical User Interface (GUI) has been
- qualified to support up to 512 items (total number
- volume elements, disks and filesystems) in the
- following configurations:
-
- * Origin 2000 (180-MHz, 3-cpu, 256MB main memory)
- * Origin 200 (180-MHz, 2-cpu, 256MB main memory)
- * O2 (195-MHz, 384MB main memory)
- * Windows NT PC (NT 4, Service Pack 6, Java plugin 1.1.8,
- Netscape 4.79 or Internet Explorer 5)

-
- SGI has not qualified XVM Manager beyond these
- configurations. XVM Manager can support more items,
- but it will run slower. Performance may be improved by
- running XVM Manager on a system having more memory and
- faster CPUs or by running XVM Manager on a local
- workstation (such as O2, Octane, Fuel, Linux PC, or
- Windows PC) as opposed to on another system on the
- network (such as a CXFS cluster node) that exports the
- GUI for remote display via X Windows.
-
- +o See the Sysadm Base release notes for more information
- about known problems and workarounds in the Sysadm Base
- software. See the IRIX Execution Environment release
- notes for more information about known problems and
- workarounds in the XVM software.
-
- +o When volume elements other than volumes are created or
- detached, the system automatically creates a volume and
- a subvolume that are associated with the volume
- element. When you create a volume element, you can
- explicitly name this generated volume, in which case
- the volume name is stored in label space and persists
- across machine reboots.
-
- XVM Manager GUI does not display volumes and subvolumes
- that were not named explicitly. The GUI displays the
- children of these volumes and subvolumes as available
- for use or "unattached". In contrast, the CLI shows
- all volumes and subvolumes.

-
-
- The GUI displays filesystems that are on volumes that
- were not named explicitly, but lists the volumes as
- "None". Volumes and subvolumes that the system
- generated automatically with temporary names are
- mentioned in the full paths of "unattached" volume
- elements (for example, "/vol96/data"), but the GUI
- ignores them otherwise.
-
- To reduce the risk of data loss, it is recommended that
- you name volumes explicitly when using the GUI. If you
- have created volumes with the CLI that you did not name
- explicitly, you can use the "xvm" command-line tool to
- assign these volumes permanent names before proceeding.
- This can reduce the risk of data loss.
-
- Caution: Always exercise care when restructuring volume
- elements, as data that resides on the volume element
- can be lost during restructuring (dragging and
- dropping). The GUI attempts to warn the user when it
- can predict there is high likelihood of data loss, but,
- when a volume is not associated with a mounted
- filesystem, neither the CLI nor the GUI can determine
- whether that volume holds important data.
-
- +o XVM GUI might cease running after being left running
- for a long time (a few days) due to Java 1.1.8 runtime
- bugs. If this happens, restart the GUI.
-
- +o Attempting to use the XVM GUI to administer a very
- large configuration can cause problems. For example,
- if you drag one of 1000 slices onto an empty slot or
- onto a volume, if you create 1000 slices then switch
- from a volume elements view to the Disks view, or if
- you delete more than 100 slices, the GUI may cease
- running, run slowly, or hang. If this happens, restart
- the GUI.
-
- +o XFS does not support growing a filesystem's log
- section. Therefore XVM Manager's "Grow Filesystem"
- task does not support growing a filesystem's log
- section.
-
- +o It is not recommended to have two volumes with the same
- name and associated with filesystems, one in cluster
- domain and permanently named, the other in local domain
- with a temporary name. Clicking on either volume in
- the tree might cause the GUI to cease running. You
- need to restart the GUI, if this occurs.
-
- +o If the GUI is connected to a given node in the cluster,
- it is possible that the GUI cannot know the status of
-
-

- another node in the cluster. In order for a node to
- show the state of another node, CXFS services must be
- active on the node to which the GUI is connected. This
- is because the state information is exchanged by
- daemons that are not running unless CXFS services are
- active. If CXFS services are not active on a given
- node, then it will report the state of all other nodes
- as "Unknown". The node can tell that itself is not
- active, and will report a state of "Inactive" for its
- own state. If CXFS services are active on a given
- node, then that node will correctly report the state of
- all the other nodes in the cluster.
-
- If you cannot find out the state of a given node,
- restart the GUI and connect to an active node in the
- cluster, or start CXFS services on the connected node.
-
- +o Sometimes an cluster or node will have been created or
- deleted but it is not displayed correctly in the GUI.
- You must log in to the server and use the
- /etc/init.d/cluster restart command to clear the
- problem condition.
-
- +o When running the GUI in a web browser, you may
- encounter OutOfMemoryError errors even if there is
- plenty of free memory available on your system. To
- increase the amount of memory available to the GUI, use
- the Java Plug-in Control Panel to set the "Java Run
- Time Parameters" to "-mx40m". This allows the Java
- Plug-in to use up to 40 megabytes of memory.
-
- To run the Java Plug-in Control Panel on IRIX, visit
- the web page

-
- On Windows, the Java Plug-in Control Panel is available
- on the "Programs" section of the "Start" menu.
-
- You will need to close all of your browser windows and
- then restart your browser in order for changes made in
- the Java Plug-in Control Panel to take effect.
-
- +o If you load the GUI using Netscape on IRIX and then
- switch to another page in Netscape, the XVM Manager GUI
- will not operate correctly. To avoid this problem,
- leave the XVM Manager GUI page up and open a new
- Netscape window if you want to view another page.
